Widely regarded as a commuter town that’s just 14 miles north of St. Paul, Hugo, MN is a place that has seemingly endless possibilities for today’s savvy suburban home buyers. Located almost immediately north of White Bear Lake, Hugo sits almost directly on the northern border of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and its easy and almost direct access to Interstate 35E makes trips back and forth to the city fairly quick and easy. The downtown part of Hugo is fairly sleepy, but there’s several shopping centers and commercial outlets situated out towards the west side of town, which is where you’ll find many of Hugo’s community amenities and service businesses.

Living in Hugo

Like many smaller communities in Minnesota, a number of lakes are scattered throughout Hugo’s boundaries, with its largest being Oneka Lake. As you might expect, fishing, boating, and any number of other outdoor recreational activities play a big role in the Hugo way of life, and it’s the town’s pleasant rural landscape that keeps drawing home buyers to the area.

Despite Hugo’s fabulous natural landscape and its close proximity to the Twin Cities, this Washington County community is still only home to around 14,000 people, which can largely be attributed to the city’s careful and responsible planning and development procedures. With that said, however, Hugo has also seen rapid growth relatively recently, which is of course still embraced by local officials and residents alike. Farmland and lots of open agricultural space certainly define the city of Hugo to some degree, but as mentioned above, there’s also a number of businesses and attractions here that also help keep living in Hugo easy and convenient. Most of Hugo’s small restaurants and local shops sit somewhere along Forest Boulevard (Highway 61) or Frenchman Road just off the Interstate, which basically act as the city’s only two major thoroughfares. Oneka Ridge Golf Course is also located in Hugo and lies just east of the northern tip of Bald Eagle Lake.

Hugo Real Estate at a Glance

Considering Rice Lake, Oneka Lake, and parts of Bald Eagle Lake are all part of the Hugo landscape, it’s safe to say lake homes are big part of the local real estate market. A wide variety of ranch style homes and traditional two stories can also be found around the downtown part of Hugo, but as alluded to above, farms and houses with plenty of acreage tend to be what most home buyers want when looking to become part of the Hugo, MN community.
