Scandia MN Homes for Sale

Scandia, MN is a small residential community that sits just 20 minutes north of Stillwater. Defined by its serene rural atmosphere that seems worlds away from the lively and vibrant Twin Cities, Scandia is still only about 33 miles from downtown St. Paul, making it a viable option for any home buyer who still needs to commute to the city. And although a 30+ mile commute each way may seem like a lot to take on, the drive is actually quite easy via I-35 and usually only takes about 35 to 45 minutes on most days.

Living in Scandia

Scandia was originally known as New Scandia Township all the way up until 2007, when it was first incorporated. But despite the city itself still being relatively new compared to many other towns around Washington County, the community has a very rich history as being the first place in all of Minnesota where Swedish immigrants settled. Fast forward to today and Scandia still embraces its early Scandinavian roots as demonstrated with multiple festivals and events held during the year, and through both the Swedish Settler’s Monument near Highway 97 and the Gammelgården Museum, which is dedicated to preserving the early Swedish immigrant way of life.

Spending time outdoors is a big part of the lifestyle here in Scandia given it’s so close to William O’Brien State Park and a number of different lakes, which includes Big Marine Lake. A paradise for anybody who loves outdoor recreation, William O’Brien State Park features all kinds of hiking trails, picnic areas, birdwatching posts, and camp grounds, and because it’s perched up against the St.Croix River, fishing and canoeing are also among favorite things to do here as well. Along with the river, the sheer number of lakes and ponds obviously make boating popular in this part of Washington County, but on a lake as big as Big Marine Lake, it really doesn’t get much better.
